National Centers for Systems Biology

Annual Centers Meetings

Each year a meeting is held by, and for, the National Centers for Systems Biology:

2011 – Annual meeting of the National Centers for Systems Biology
June 16-17, Durham, NC, hosted jointly by the Duke Center for Systems Biology and the Center for Complex Biological Systems at University of California, Irvine.

2010 – Annual Meeting of the National Centers for Systems Biology
July 12-13, Seattle WA, Center for Systems Biology, Institute for Systems Biology

The Center for Systems Biology, located in Seattle, Washington at the Institute for Systems Biology (ISB), was pleased to host the National Centers for Systems Biology for a two day meeting, Monday July 12 and Tuesday July 13, 2010.

The Seattle meeting included presentations from each Center to define systems biology within the context of their Center.  To facilitate interaction across the Centers’ members, presentations were followed by open discussions, lightning presentations, and a reception and poster session. The key aims of the meeting in Seattle were to: a) discuss the current and future accomplishments of systems biology, b) highlight the expanse of systems biology approaches towards understanding biological complexity; c) exchange and identify common facets of systems biology, and to stimulate possibilities for collaboration; d) share and coordinate novel education and outreach programs.

At the heart of the Centers is the conviction that the challenges of systems biology are best addressed through multidisciplinary, focused efforts that to drive the development of new biological insights, technologies and education opportunities.

2009 – Annual Meeting of the National Centers for Systems Biology
July 13-14, Bethesda, MD, National Institute of General Medical Sciences

A key aim of the meeting was to introduce NIH staff to the exciting field of systems biology and the activities of the National Centers for Systems Biology. On the first day of the meeting, PIs (or other senior investigators) defined systems biology in the context of their Center’s work and then provided compelling examples of what they have achieved. Each Center also had a presentation from a junior investigator. The talks were followed by a discussion led by a panel of PIs whose purpose is to engage the audience. The second day of the meeting included a discussion of common activities and community building. Among the topics that were discussed: (i) common elements of systems biology and possibilities for cooperation, (ii) relevant training opportunities, (iii) coordination of outreach efforts, and (iv) creation of a portal for the Centers and other community activities.

2008 – Annual Meeting of the National Centers for Systems Biology July 9, Princeton, NJ, Princeton University

2007 – Meeting of the National Centers of Integrative and Systems Biology
June 12-13, Boston, MA, Massachusetts Institute of Technology/Harvard

The Systems Biology Centers of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences held its annual meeting on June 12 and 13, 2007 in Boston. The meeting was held in conjunction with the National Cancer Institute’s Integrative Cancer Biology Program (ICBP) bi-annual meeting of principal investigators. The two groups held a combined plenary session on June 13.
